West is the dealer and opens 2♠. North not really paying attention then bids 1♥. He realises his error and then ‘corrects’ his insufficient bid to 2♥ (again insufficient). East is fed-up by this stage and calls the Director.
The Director refers to Law 27A he asks East if he would like to accept the original 1♥ bid – East declines. He now asks East would he like to accept the insufficient 2♥ bid – again East declines. Referring to Law 27B1 he now allows North to replace the insufficient bid(s) with the lowest (legal) bid in the same denomination (hearts) or with a comparable call – either of these situations allowing partner to bid freely. If he replaces with any other call, partner would be silenced for the remainder of the auction. North elects to bid 3♥ and the auction continues normally.
