Based on a EBL Workshop Exercise – Belfast
West is the dealer and opens a weak 2♠. North, not really paying attention then bids 1♥. She realises her error and then corrects her insufficient bid to 2♥ (again insufficient). East now calls the Director.
The Director asks East whether he wants to accept the insufficient 2♥ bid – East declines. Referring to Law 27B1 he now allows North to replace the insufficient bid(s) with the lowest (legal) bid in the same denomination (hearts) or with a comparable call – either of these situations allowing partner to bid freely. If she replaces with any other call, partner would be silenced for the remainder of the auction. North elects to bid 3♥ and the auction continues normally with East bidding 3♠, South 4♥, and West declaring in 4♠ – one off.
